The development of predatory, hijacked, and cloned journals has disturbed the academic world, especially in fulfilling the obligation to publish reputable journals. To overcome this problem, the Center for Scientific Publications and Journal Resilience LPPM UB held a Workshop on Identifying and Avoiding a Predatory, Hijacked, and Cloned Journal Publishing on Thursday (22/2) in the Hall of Building F, Faculty of Economy and Business, 7th floor.

What’s interesting about this activity is that the UB Research and Community Service Institute is not only targeting researchers but also those who publish at Brawijaya University. Also, the activity was attended by heads of departments, heads of study programs, professors, and postgraduate students.

“In this workshop, we will be given insight into how to be careful in choosing a reputable journal and be alert to the practices we find in advertising in the form of predatory, hijacked, and cloned journals,” explained Dhiana Puspitawahi, PhD in the opening remarks of this event. Furthermore, the Chair of LPPM UB emphasized that LPPM UB is required to make efforts in building a research and literacy ecosystem. One of them is by paying attention to publications in the correct journals.

Several reasons why researchers publish their scientific articles in predatory and hijacked journals include convenience or the need for speed of publication due to pressure/promotion or incentive needs. In this case, researchers can be deceived because fake copies appear to be reputable journals. Several tips and tricks were explained further by three resource persons at this activity.

Concentrating on discussing migration letters, a guest speaker from Universiti Malaya, Dato Professor Kamaruzaman Jusoff, explained the steps to check fake or cloned journals. Next, Prof. Dodi explained efforts to avoid predatory, hijacked, and cloned journals in the social sector. Then, the life and science fields were delivered by Prof. Akhmad Sabarudin.

In the future, this topic will be presented again and socialized to the Brawijaya University academic institution, so that it can truly meet the demands for publication output in research activities and community service.
