On Monday, October 24th, 2022, the Institute of Research and Community Services Universitas Brawijaya (IRCS UB) held a Workshop on Center of Excellence (COE) Brainstorming. This workshop is an initial step in brainstorming COE with the experts. Vice-Rector of Research and Innovation, Dr. Bambang Susilo., MSc., Agr attended the workshop at the Banquet room, 6th-floor Rectorat Building. There were also the officials of IRCS UB, COE drafters, the Head of the Research and Community Service Agency for every faculty, the Head of research centers, and some representatives of UB researchers. The committee invited Prof. Dr.-Eng Yudi Darma from Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) and Dr. Agus Joko Pitoyo, MA from Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) Yogyakarta as the speakers.

As a legal state university, Universitas Brawijaya (UB) had to prepare the strategic research and community service programs leading to the Center of Excellence (COE). CoE in the future would bring the existence of UB to the national and international level for research program realization. In general, this also would bring UB to help community development.

In his opening speech, Bambang Susilo said that brainstorming is a method to find ideas to find problem solutions. The urgency of this brainstorming was to unvarying perceptions from researchers and lecturers of the CoE importance.

In his material titled “Towards Home of Excellent Innovation in Brawijaya (education, research and community services)”, Prof Yudi explained some scenarios to build CoE. One of them was to build and raise the available centers by sorting 2 or 3 that were ready for CoE. “Ready means two aspects: the facilities and human resources. The major components were leading and unique topics, top human resources, advanced laboratory facilities (for experiments), adequate funding, collaboration, and excellent policy,” said Prof. Yudi, who had the experience be the staff of the Research Center for Nano devices and Systems at Hiroshima University Japan.

Further, on the second material, Dr. Agus Joko Pitoyo, MA from Universitas Gadjah Mada, shared “Management and Development of Research Study to Build Center of Excellence”. He explained that the development of an information system is a significant indicator of transforming a center to be CoE.  “In recent years, multimedia and information system are two main things to process downstream. Besides, the process of documenting research output is impossible without the support of high-tech laboratory, multimedia, library, and if possible, with the extensive big data,” he concluded.
